Is Coffee Essential For Survival?

The Swiss are known for many things: Banks, cheese, knives, and of course their flag is a big plus. One of the hallmarks of the nation since World War 1 has been preparedness. The Swiss government has had a standing mandate to maintain large stockpiles of essential supplies in preparation for the event of war or disaster.

This week they recommended removing coffee from that list of essential supplies, claiming that it is not essential for survival. The report concludes that “Coffee has almost no calories and subsequently does not contribute, from the physiological perspective, to safeguarding nutrition.”

While it is true that coffee has zero calories (as we mentioned last month), I am going to have to disagree with their finding. Coffee feeds the soul. It contributes to happiness and emotional well being. While there can be no statistical evidence for this, coffee probably prevents countless murders every morning, maybe even in your own home. So, yes. Coffee IS essential for survival. If not your own, then that of those around you.
